Ispread my designs across the polished wood, the sketches and swatches fanning out like a colorful bouquet. He chuckled, the sound rumbling through his chest. "Oh, I have my share of shiny things. But I've found that some of the greatest treasures are the ones you can savor. The way a complex vintage coats your tongue, the flavors unfolding like a story..."

As he spoke, his tongue flicked out, as if tasting the air. It was forked at the tip, decidedly inhuman. The sight sent a bolt of heat straight through me, coiling low in my body.

"And your designs will provide the perfect setting to enjoy those treasures," he continued, oblivious to my reaction. Or perhaps all too aware, judging by the glint in his eye. "You have a real gift, Harper."

He was so close now, his body bracketing mine as he leaned over the table. I could feel the heat of him, the barely leashed power thrumming beneath his skin. It took every ounce of my self-control not to lean back into him, to let myself be enveloped by his presence.

"T-thank you," I managed, my voice barely above a whisper. "I'm glad you're pleased with the designs."

"Oh, I'm more than pleased," he purred, his lips brushing the shell of my ear. "In fact, I think this calls for a celebration. Perhaps we could open one of those bottles, see if the reality lives up to the promise of your vision."

I knew I should refuse, should put some distance between us and steer our interaction back to purely professional waters. But with his scent clouding my senses and his voice wrapping around me like silk, my resolve was swiftly crumbling.

"Kieran," I breathed, his name a plea and a prayer on my lips. "We shouldn't... I mean, I'm here to work..."

"All work and no play?" he murmured, his hand skimming down my arm, igniting sparks in its wake. "Where's the fun in that?"

Fun. God, when was the last time I'd had any of that? My life had been all work and no play for so long, even before the breakup. Maybe it was time to let loose a little.

But not too loose. I couldn't afford to jeopardize this job, or my reputation.
